Shed News 9th November 2024

Projects at the Shed

It’s been a productive week here at the Shed, with members diving into a range of hands-on projects. Les has been crafting a mud kitchen, a fun outdoor addition that’s sure to bring plenty of joy. Meanwhile, Peter has been busy building an outdoor table and bringing new life to a set of chairs with some careful restoration work.

The laser engraver has also seen action, used to create personalised birthday plaques and etch cherished photos for our members. This tool continues to add a special touch to meaningful keepsakes for the Shed community.

Shed Cleanup

A big thank you to everyone who pitched in today for the Shed cleanup! The effort was fantastic, and the space is looking better than ever. Let’s all show our appreciation to these members who dedicated their time and energy to keep our Shed in top shape.

Dust Extraction

Progress continues on our dust extraction project. We had one company out for a quote this week, and another is scheduled for Monday. Although it’s a slow process, ensuring we get this done right is essential for our workspace safety and comfort. Stay tuned for updates as we move forward!

Flooring Update

All quotes for the new flooring in the office, computer room, and lunchroom are now complete. The details are being submitted to the committee for final approval, and we’re optimistic that this will be a smooth and straightforward process. Once approved, we’ll be ready to move forward with the installation, bringing a fresh new look and feel to these spaces.

Fire Safety Update

In an effort to prioritise the safety of everyone at the Shed, the Council recently brought in SureFire to conduct a thorough fire safety audit and make necessary upgrades. With new fire safety regulations set to take effect across NSW next year, we are committed to meeting these standards to ensure our Shed remains a safe place for all.

One of the key changes includes replacing our front door lock with a fire-safe mechanism. This adjustment, while required by law, is also a proactive step toward improving emergency preparedness, ensuring that exits are both secure and quickly accessible in case of an emergency.

The safety of our members and the public is our highest priority, and we’re dedicated to creating a compliant and secure environment. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and understanding as we implement these updates.

New Members

We’re thrilled to share that interest in our Shed has been high, with several new members joining us last month. Bringing in fresh faces, skills, and interests is essential for keeping our Shed dynamic and thriving. New members bring new ideas and help strengthen our community, making the Shed an even better place for everyone.

A New Short Story by Victor Kirwan

"Emma's Lament" is a poignant exploration of isolation and the longing for acceptance. The story follows Emma, a socially ostracised girl struggling with her identity in a world that cruelly judges her appearance and intellect. The narrative effectively captures Emma's quiet resilience amidst relentless bullying and familial neglect.

The prose is straightforward yet evocative, painting a vivid picture of Emma's internal and external conflicts. The introduction of Mr. Pearson adds complexity; he initially appears as a nurturing figure but ultimately reveals a darker, exploitative side. This betrayal culminates in a chilling climax that shifts the tone dramatically, leaving readers questioning the nature of love and protection.

While the story presents heavy themes of bullying, neglect, and betrayal, it ultimately underscores Emma's tragic journey toward self-awareness. The abrupt ending invites reflection on the cyclical nature of abuse and the deep scars it leaves behind. Overall, "Emma's Lament" is a compelling, if uncomfortable, read that challenges societal perceptions of beauty and worth.

Men's Shed: Building Community Through Projects

In communities around Australia, Men's Sheds have become vital hubs for camaraderie, skill-sharing, and community service. These communal spaces provide a haven for individuals to work on personal projects, but they also serve a greater purpose – giving back to the community through various initiatives.

At the heart of every Men's Shed is a diverse group of individuals, each with their own unique skills and talents. Whether it's woodworking, metalworking, gardening, or any other craft, members come together to pursue their passions and hone their skills in a supportive environment.

However, beyond the individual pursuits, Men's Sheds also engage in projects that benefit the wider community. These projects range from small-scale initiatives to large-scale community endeavors, all aimed at making a positive impact on the lives of others.

One of the core principles of Men's Sheds is their commitment to community service. Members understand the importance of giving back and strive to be a positive asset to their neighbourhoods. This ethos is reflected in the various community projects undertaken by Men's Sheds across Australia.

From building Mud Kitchens for local childcare facilities, to constructing and refurbishing old furniture for members of the public, Men's Sheds contribute their time, skills, and resources to enhance public spaces and promote community well-being. These projects not only beautify the surroundings but also foster a sense of pride and ownership among community members.

Crucially, Men's Sheds operate on a non-profit basis. While they do not charge for their services, they may accept donations to support their project
